About Charnwood PT250SP 10″ x 6″ Planer Thicknesser With 24 x TC Cutters In Spiral Block

The PT250SP represents a big step up from the regular hobby planer thicknesser to create a heavy duty version with increased accuracy.

Carbide Cutters

At the heart of this combination planer thicknesser is a cutter block with 24 square carbide cutters arranged in 2 helical rows. This spiral method of setting the cutters in the block means that each rotation makes 24 smaller cuts (rather than just 2 with a traditional block), which requires less input from the motor and produces less noise. The quality of the finish is superb and the cutters themselves will last 10 times longer between servicing. When they do wear out, each cutter can be rotated round 90 degrees to offer a new cutting edge.

Planing Function

The heavy duty construction around the planing beds is more in line with professional level machines. Wings on the side of each bed run on a dovetail rail supported by a casting, to give smooth and dependable adjustments.

The surface of the planing beds is ribbed, which reduces friction when feeding in large boards. Increasing the total length of the beds to over 1000mm gives increased support when working with those longer boards. The upper surface is precision ground to ensure a perfectly flat working area.

The infeed planing bed height is adjusted by rotating the handle on the end, a depth scale with sight glass is marked in graduations of 0.5mm and can be set to remove up to a maximum of 2.5mm in each pass.

The large side fence is held at 90 degrees with a sturdy casting. When required, it can be tilted back up to 135 degrees with a clear scale showing graduations for each degree. A single locking lever secures the fence angle. There is an adjustable preset stop at 90 degrees, so resetting the fence back to the normal operating position is quick and simple.

The overhead bridge guard is adjustable in height to allow timber of up to 80mm to pass underneath. When planing a taller piece, the bridge guard is positioned further back from the fence covering the exposed part of the cutter block.

Change Over

During planing operations a dust collection hood sits underneath the beds. To swap over functions it is moved to a position on top of the tables. It takes about 60 seconds and unlike most hobby models nothing needs to be removed from the machine.

A micro switch ensures the motor will not start unless the hood is correctly installed.

Thicknessing Function

The thicknessing bed has a steel cover plate to give a more durable, low friction surface. (Tip: All planer beds will benefit from applying a machine wax to help the work piece slide over the surface).

The height of the bed is adjusted by rotating a handle, 1 rotation = 3mm. A clear scale is marked out in 1mm increments.  A stop bar prevents over loading in excess of the 2.0mm maximum depth of cut for each pass. Once the work piece is offered up to the thicknesser a pair of driven rubber coated feed rollers, feed it through the cutter block and out the other side. When a large amount of material needs removing, make several passes raising the bed after each pass.

The motor has overload protection and will cut off when triggered.

Supplied with 5 spare TC cutters, 76mm diameter dust extraction outlet, floor stand with rubber feet, push stick, service tools, onboard storage for tools and spare cutters, cable tidy, 1.9m power cable and standard 13 amp UK plug.

It is essential to use dust extraction with a planer thicknesser. The extractor removes all the dust and chips which will otherwise build up, causing a blockage and eventually damage to the machine. Using an extractor also increases the life of the cutters.
Use 63/81RC to convert the dust outlet to use 65mm diameter hose. Use 100/81RC to convert for 100mm diameter hose.

What are the advantages of spiral carbide cutters over conventional straight knives?
Shearing Cut = Better finish. Expect a smoother finish in softwood, hardwood and difficult grain.
Low Sound Levels = Less noise by up to 50%. Each blade is moving less air and taking a smaller cut.
More Knives = Reduced energy consumption. Each cut uses less energy, overall saving can be 30%.
TC (Tungsten carbide) Cutters = longer cutter life, up to 10 times compared to HSS. Each cutter can be rotated when worn.
Less Maintenance = Quick and easy to change out 1 or 2 cutters after a chip.
