The Planet Plus Long Hole Boring Kit comes with 2 centres. The drive centre is a traditional 4 prong type, 25mm diameter, with a centre point. The centre point can be removed, making it hollow and a pilot pin fitted to hold a piece that has already been drilled.
The tail centre can be used for all kinds of spindle turning. It has a removable tip which then turns it into a hollow ring tail centre with a bore of 5/16″ (8mm).
The drill bit is 600mm (24″) long with a diameter of 5/16″ (8mm). On most lathes you can drill about 450mm deep from each end.
Using the long hole boring kit
With the lathe running and the hollow ring tail centre fitted, simply drill into to the work piece with the drill bit inserted through the tailstock and through the hollow centre. Drill in small steps until you get about halfway through. Then remove the work piece and change the pointed tip on the drive centre to the pilot pin. Reverse the work piece and insert the drilled hole over the pilot pin. Use the centring rod through the tailstock to centre the workpiece on the undrilled end while tightening up the tailstock. Remove the centring rod and continue to drill through the remainder of the work piece.
