A medium tree, 5 to 10 m in height, occurring in medium to low altitudes in open woodland.

The heartwood is a dark red brown. Weighing 1025kg/m3 it is a very hard timber that sandpapers well and also takes varnish and oils well. Tools need to be kept sharp, It is used for furniture, turning and carving.
