A set of 4 carbide scraper turning tools, incorporating the newest technology in woodturning: Replaceable carbide cutting tips. Overall length is 470mm offering plenty of control for larger projects.

The handles are 320mm long and made from Ash. A distinctive stainless steel ferrule connects a square shaft which is chrome finished and laser etched. On the end is mounted a Tungsten Carbide (TC) cutting tip. The 4 razor sharp cutting tips have different shapes to achieve different types of cut. Carbide cutters are presented to the timber at 90 degrees and cut with a scraping action. This is a much simpler skill to learn when compared to using a traditional bowl gouge, which is what makes it especially suitable for beginners.

Carbide cutting tips will last up to 50 times longer than High Speed Steel (HSS). K10 carbide has an extremely high hardness of 92HRC. This completely removes the need to re-sharpen the cutter.  When the cutting edge eventually dulls, each tip can simply be rotated so a new cutting face is used. The Round, Square and Radius cutters can be rotated 4 times, the triangle cutter can be rotated twice. After all faces have been used, replace the cutting tip with a new one.

The steel shaft is square, to sit comfortably on the the tool rest. It is 10mm x 10mm with enough strength to eliminate vibration from the cutting tip.

This set is suitable for all kinds of spindle and bowl turning. Can be used with softwoods and hardwoods.

Supplied in a foam lined storage box which will keep your tools safe over a long lifetime. T15 Torx key for rotating the cutter is included.

HSS vs Carbide?

Traditional wood turning chisels are made from HSS. It takes many many hours of practice to master the use of a HSS bowl gouge.  It can also take a while to master sharpening of the chisels too. It is therefore not surprising that people who have learned those skills remain very loyal to HSS chisels.

Carbide scraper tools require no sharpening or steep learning curve to use them. New wood turners can pick up a carbide chisel and get instant, satisfying results. The surface finish is not as good, but with an extra couple of minutes sanding, carbide chisels achieve exactly the same results as HSS chisels. Carbide turning tools have been responsible for introducing many new people to the world of woodturning.
