Why Choose Carbide?
A set of 3 carbide scraper turning tools, incorporating the newest technology in woodturning: Replaceable carbide cutting tips.
3 Piece set includes:
The straight shafted hollowing tool has a square cross section, tapered towards the end to allow for clearance of shavings when starting to hollow out. It is used for the initial hollowing out of bowl blanks prior to using the curve tools for clearing out the sides and any undercut areas of the bowl.
The shallow curve hollowing tool features a moderate swan neck shape to allow for clearing out of the inner sides of a bowl. It is generally used after the initial hollowing out of bowls has been carried out with the straight tool.
The full curve hollowing tool features a pronounced swan neck shape designed for reaching into sharply undercut areas which are wider than the opening of the rim. Perfect for vases. It is normally used as the final hollowing out tool, as it can reach areas of the inner bowl that the other two tools cannot reach.
Carbide cutters offer super fast operation and leave a smooth finish.
The handles are 390mm long and made from European Black Ash. A distinctive stainless steel ferrule connects a steel shaft which is chrome finished and laser etched. On the end is mounted a Tungsten Carbide (TC) cutting tip. The 3 razor sharp round cutting tips are 9mm in diameter with a bevelled edge. Carbide cutters are presented to the timber at 90 degrees and cut with a scraping action. The shaft of these tools are designed to allow access for hollowing out the inside of all kinds of bowls, whatever the shape and depth.
Carbide cutting tips will last up to 50 times longer than High Speed Steel. K10 carbide has an extremely high hardness of 92HRC. This completely removes the need to re-sharpen the cutter. When the cutting edge eventually dulls, each tip can simply be rotated by 90 degrees, so a new cutting face is used. The 3 round cutters can each be rotated 4 times. After all faces have been used, replace the cutting tip with a new one.
The steel shaft has a flat underside to sit comfortably on the the tool rest and present the tip at the correct angle to the work piece. They are strong enough to eliminate vibration from the cutting tip.
This set is suitable for all kinds of hollowing operations, such as bowls and vases. Can be used with softwoods and hardwoods.
Supplied in a foam lined storage box which will keep your tools safe over a long lifetime. 2.0mm Alan key for rotating the cutter is included.
HSS vs Carbide?
Traditional wood turning chisels are made from HSS. It takes many many hours of practice to master the use of a HSS bowl gouge. It can also take a while to master sharpening of the chisels too. It is therefore not surprising that people who have learned those skills remain very loyal to HSS chisels.
Carbide scraper tools require no sharpening or steep learning curve to use them. New wood turners can pick up a carbide chisel and get instant, satisfying results. The surface finish is not as good, but with an extra couple of minutes sanding, carbide chisels achieve exactly the same results as HSS chisels. Carbide turning tools have been responsible for introducing many new people to the world of woodturning.
