About Charnwood M2017-1 M2 Cryo Hardened HSS 3/8″ Spindle Gouge – Short Version

Intended Use

A spindle gouge is a woodturning chisel used for detailed shaping work on spindle projects — meaning wood that’s mounted with the grain running parallel to the lathe bed.

Its shallow flute and lighter build make it ideal for controlled, precise cuts rather than heavy stock removal.

You use a spindle gouge to:

  • Cut beads and coves

  • Shape decorative profiles

  • Blend curves smoothly

  • Add fine details

  • Refine spindle forms like chair legs, handles, and balusters

Because it’s designed for finesse, it gives you excellent control when creating flowing shapes and crisp transitions.

Cryo Hardened M2 HSS Woodturning Chisel

Cryogenic treatment of M2 HSS means this steel has been subjected to a complex immersion procedure at temperatures as low as minus 195C. The result is that the High Speed steel has a hardness of 65HRC. That is extremely hard. Typical HSS chisels are 58HRC. A higher hardness level improves wear resistance and edge-holding ability, ensuring that your tools stay sharper for longer, typically 5 times longer than standard HSS chisels.

With M2C chisels you spend more time turning: less time sharpening. When it is time for sharpening the blades are remarkably fast and easy to sharpen, as they allow you to remove less material to produce a perfect razor sharp edge.

With handles made from Ash, distinctive stainless steel ferrules and laser etched blades. The blades are sharpened, polished and ready to go.
