Upgrade your bench grinder by fitting a CBN wheel for incredible sharpening results on all kinds of HSS turning tools.
CBN is an abbreviation for Cubic Boron Nitride. It is an abrasive material. Cubic boron nitride is the second-hardest known material after diamond, making it useful in a wide variety of industrial applications.
Application
CBN wheels can be used on a bench grinder or on a woodworking lathe.
CBN wheels are suitable for sharpening all woodworking tools made of High Speed Steel (HSS) including M2, M2Cryo & M42.
Not recommended for sharpening Tungsten Carbide. It can be done, but will wear out the CBN wheel quite quickly.
Construction
The wheel consists of a aluminum body, The full width of the rim, and a little of the side, is coated in a plating process with a layer of CBN grains. The 2 edges of the rim are square.
Grit Size
180 is a general purpose grit size which leaves a ground surface similar to what could be obtained if using a conventional abrasive of 180 grit. Also known as B91 as the average abrasive grain size is 91 microns.
Maintenance
None. The CBN wheel never needs truing or dressing. Plated wheels never change size or shape therefore eliminating time-consuming re-profiling.
Important
If you are used to using an aluminium oxide wheel, be aware that CBN wheels do not require much force, just a little backup pressure for the weight of the tool. Too much pressure can generate excessive heat and may harm the wheel. CBN grinding grains are as hard as diamond grains and will do the work for you without any effort and in a very short time.
